Kyambura Gorge is located in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Western Uganda. It covers an area of 156 square kilometres, with the Kyambura River running through the reserve and connecting to the Kazinga channel. The gorge has a unique landscape, which is an excellent habitat for savannah predators.

Chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge, also known as the “Valley of Apes,” is an unforgettable experience! Located in Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda, this 100-meter-deep and 1-kilometre-long gorge is home to a habituated community of chimpanzees.

The Trekking Experience

Imagine hiking down the gorge, surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, and spotting these intelligent creatures up close. The trekking experience typically lasts 2-3 hours, with two sessions available: morning and afternoon.

Chimpanzee Behaviour and Habitat

As you explore the gorge, you’ll have the chance to observe chimpanzees feeding, playing, and interacting with each other. They’re known to be highly intelligent and social, living in communities of 30-80 members.

Conservation Efforts

The Uganda Wildlife Authority and Volcano Safaris have joined forces to create a forest corridor, linking Kyambura Gorge to neighbouring forests, to prevent inbreeding and promote genetic diversity among the

chimpanzee population.

Chimpanzee tracking is allowed for ages starting from 15 years and above.

Throughout the year, but dry seasons (June-August and December-February) offer better trekking conditions.
