Mount Elgon National Park is situated in the eastern part of Uganda at the border with Kenya. Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano and one of Uganda’s oldest geological formations, with its first eruption that occurred around 24 million years ago. The mountain was Africa’s tallest mountain, standing higher than Kilimanjaro. However, millions of years of erosion have gradually reduced its height to 4,321 m, ranking it as the 4th highest peak in East Africa and the 8th highest on the continent.
Mount Elgon is home to the Bagisu and Sabiny tribes, as the Ndorobo community has historically lived in the forests of Benet. To the Bagisu (Bamasaba), the mountain represents their ancestral father, Masaba and they continue to honor this heritage by referring to the mountain by his name.
Mount Elgon National Park supports over 300 bird species, including the endangered lammergeyer, Tacazze sunbird and Jackson’s francolin. The parks’ forests and moorlands are also home to various mammals, including blue monkeys, black and white colobus monkeys, forest elephants, leopards and hyenas. The diverse vegetation zones range from montane forests to alpine moorlands featuring giant lobelias and groundsels, which thrive at high altitudes.
ACTIVITIES IN MOUNT ELGON NATIONAL PARK
Mountain hiking and trekking
Trekking is the major activity in Mount Elgon National Park and one of the most rewarding ways to experience the park. Mount Elgon has gentle slopes, thus making it accessible to a wider range of tourists.
Trekking routes
There are three main trekking routes to the summit of mount Elgon and these include
- Sasa trail, which is the shortest but steepest route, perfect for skilled hikers searching for a direct climb.
- Sipi trail, which is the most attractive route, starts near Sipi Falls and offers beautiful views and waterfalls.
- Piswa trail, which is the longest and gentlest route, ideal for gradual adaptation and wildlife sightings.
As tourists hike, they pass through a number of ecosystems;
- Dense montane forests filled with birds and primates
- Bamboo zones and open woodlands
- Moorlands with unique afro-alpine vegetation
- The caldera at the summit, one of the largest in the world.
The trekking process can last for 1 day to many days depending on your route and pace. While on the way, you camp or stay in the huts, thus fully immersing yourself in nature.
Reaching the summit is not about the safari destination; it’s about the journey through the ever-changing landscapes. The views at the top are amazing, thus providing beautiful views of eastern Uganda and beyond.
Cave exploration
The mountain is popular for its volcanic caves that add a unique and adventurous extent to your visit. The most famous and recognized cave is Kitum Cave. What makes the caves special is that they’re a home to wildlife species such as elephants, buffaloes and antelopes that come to lick mineral-rich salt from the walls. This unique behavior known as “salt mining” is a major activity for tourists on a wildlife safari.

Birdwatching
Mount Elgon is a haven for birdwatchers with over 300 bird species recorded in the park. Its different habitats, from forests to moorlands, support a wide range of birdlife. While on a birding safari, tourists will observe a number of species, such as forest species such as turacos and hornbills, high-altitude species rare to the Afro-alpine zone, as well as rare and endemic birds of the region.

Waterfall visits
