A Unique Wildlife Experience

Unlike Uganda’s more forested parks, Lake Mburo is characterised by savannah, woodland, swamps, and five lakes, creating a varied ecosystem that supports a wide range of wildlife. It is the only national park in Uganda where you can spot zebras in abundance, and it is also renowned for its impala population, found nowhere else in the country.

Other animals frequently seen include buffalo, giraffes, topis, warthogs, waterbucks, elands, and hippos. Though the park does not have elephants or lions, this absence makes it ideal for activities such as nature walks and cycling safaris, as it is safer to explore on foot or bike compared to other parks. Leopards, however, do inhabit the park, and they are best seen during night game drives.

For bird enthusiasts, Lake Mburo National Park is a treasure trove, with over 350 bird species recorded. Highlights include the African fin foot, papyrus gonolek, bare faced go away bird, Ross’s Turaco, and the majestic African fish eagle. Lake Mburo National Park is a year round destination. The dry seasons (December to February and June to September) are best for game viewing, as animals gather near water sources. The wet seasons (March to May and October to November) bring lush greenery and excellent birding opportunities.
